Advancement out of the group stage is as follows:

The two best teams in each group plus the four best third place finishers of the six groups.
This will comprise the 16 teams that advance to the knockout stage. [ Lose and you are out ]

Which 3rd place teams move on

In order of precedence:

  1. Higher number of points in their Group stage (3pts for win, 1 pt for a tie)
    (EX: a group B 3rd place team with 4 points moves on over a group C 3rd place team with 3 points)
  2. Superior goal difference (goals scored minus goals surrendered)
  3. Higher number of goals scored
  4. Fair play conduct (involves red and yellow cards and attractiveness of play)
  5. Position in the UEFA national team coefficient ranking system
